Notes
I met Eddie Rayner at the city garage. He said that as far as he knew there had not been any wastewater problems on Hwy 209 south of Henning during the recent heavy rains. He said there are still problems at the main lift station due to "rags" hanging up in the check valves and causing the pumps to lose prime. We went to the main lift station and examined some of the rags. Eddie thinks they actually look like mop strings tangled up together. He said he has checked the lines below VF Manufacturing, which is a sewing operation, but has never found any rags or cloths. He said he may come up with something he can leave in a sewer line for a day or two to see if he can trap some of the rags and figure out where they are coming from.
I went by the Alex Haley Rest Area, which pumps its wastewater to Henning for treatment, to see if perhaps the rags were coming from there when they clean up. I described the problem to one of the employees who was cleaning when I got there. He explained how the Rest Area is cleaned and we decided they were not the source of the rags.
