Sanitary Sewer Overflow Non-Sampling
Follow-up Inspection Required
I received a call 12/29/11 at 1405 from Cordell Walton, WWTP Operator for Henning saying he noticed yesterday, 12/28/11, that a portion of the first pond levee had collapsed and the pond was losing water. He said a construction company had already been contacted and was deciding what to do. I reminded him that the first priority was to stop the overflow and then make necessary repairs.

Friday morning, 12/30/11, I followed Cordell and a contractor, Mike Johnson, into the WWTP about 0945. The treatment pond had drained and influent was crossing it and running into Alston Creek. The breached levee is right on the creek and the breach occurred where there is an old, unused discharge structure. There were signs of beaver activity in the area. I guessed the breach to be 35 to 40 feet wide and 20 to 25 feet deep.

Cordell, Mike Johnson and I discussed alternatives. Cordell and Mr. Johnson left and returned with Mayor Bursey about 1100. We again discussed alternatives and they left about 1155. I found Cordell at the City Garage. He said they were going to have a meeting at City Hall.

I met the Mayor, Cordell, and Eddie Rayner, Town Superintendent at the WWTP about 1330. The decision was made to divert the influent from the first pond to the second to stop the overflow and provide an opportunity to make repairs. They left at 1430 to get pipe and fittings.

Voice mail from Cordell at 1130 Saturday said influent was diverted to the second pond at 1000 PM Friday
