Notes
On December 8 I received voice mail from Cordell Walton, Henning's operator saying the treatment cell of the lagoon had developed a leak through the wall. I went down the next morning, the 9th, and Cordell showed me where it was. It appeared a leak had developed close to the pipe which carries water from the treatment pond to the holding pond. It was making its way to Alston Creek.
I told Cordell the State's policy was that Henning should begin working ASAP and work until the leak was stopped. I told him once it was stopped they could pump the pond down enough to determine the problem and make permanent corrections. I also recommended the leak be sampled. He drove me back to town where we found Mayor Bursey and I told him the same thing. Mayor Bursey said he understood and then instructed Cordell to go to work determining what needed to be done. I received voice mail from Cordell at 3:30 PM that afternoon saying a street department backhoe had stopped the leak using rock and dirt.
