Notes
I visited TN American Water Company on Jan 9, 2018, following the report of a diesel spill on Citico Creek on Jan 8, 2018. The creek runs along the north boundary of their property and empties into the Tennessee River very close to the TN American intakes. I met with Kitty Vaughn and was given a picture with exactly where the intakes are located in relationship to the spill. Several of the intakes are just north of where Citico Creek enters the river. The intakes are near the bottom of the river, which was about 16 feet deep at the time of the spill. The contents of the spill floated on the creek and the river, so there was minimal to no impact to the water system. They began feeding carbon at twice the dose they normally feed it in the summer time. They also did a wide range of VOC testing. Most of the results were below the detection limit. The few that were detected are normally expected in water that has been chlorinated. They were both just barely above the detection limit. I worked closely with the operators at TN American over the week following the spill to make sure there was no problem with water quality of the drinking water.
