Description and Writeup
Lucas Hughes (AGC Greenland) left voicemail for BBC on 5/3/2016 to report a release of glass grinder coolant on 5/2/2016. Butch Hatcher (AGC Greenland) provided MSDS information and a release estimate of 200 gallons via email. BBC spoke with Mr. Hughes on 5/4/2016 to obtain additional information regarding the event. Mr. Hughes indicated the release occurred when an engineer inadvertently overfilled the grinder coolant solution tank during a manual fill. Coolant mixture at approximately 1.6% coolant (balance water) leaked out of process piping and into a drain in the basement of the production building. This drain ultimately discharges to outfall 004. Upon discovery, facility representatives shut off the excess flow into the system and called a vac truck to relieve pressure in the coolant tank. Procedures for preventing recurrence are being evaluated. A written report will be submitted.
