    Description and Writeup

Tina Robinson received a call from Butch Hatcher concerning a spill at Cardinal FG Company. Beverly Brown and David Hale went to the facility to investigate. We were met by Butch Hatcher and told that at 730 am on 8/2/21, a wastewater treatment operator found a tree limb had fallen on and broken a pipe that carries sulfuric acid to an unnamed tributary/outfall 004. The acid is added to the outfall to correct the pH as the outfall leaves the facility property. This caused more acid to enter the stream than normal. It was calculated that approximately 1,450 gallons of 93% sulfuric acid was lost over the weekend. The operator notified the Environmental Engineer of the leak and the repairs were started immediately. Bart Carter with TWRA responded to the spill and walked the tributary to the confluence with the Holston River to look for dead fish. There were a few dead fish found in the tributary but none were seen in the Holston River. When we left the facility, temporary repairs had been made to the acid drip pipe and the pH in the stream had stabilized to around 7.0. Butch Hatcher followed up with an email concerning the spill and the potential long-term measures the facility will take to correct the problem and prevent a future spill.
