Complaint Description and Writeup
Complaint Description and Writeup
(10-24-22): Hi, I am writing to inform you of a strong chemical smell that occurs intermittently in our neighborhood, cross streets - Lebanon Pike, Wilowen Drive and Lisa Lane. I have reason to suspect it's coming from the Gibson guitar plant on Massman Dr but cannot confirm that. The reasons why are the following:
1. it smells like lacquer which I know they use on guitars
2. others in the neighborhood suspect it's coming from there
3. I've had employees of Gibson tell me they release emissions into the atmosphere
4. whenever I smell it, I drive down to the plant and the large exterior machine vent is on and running.
We first noticed it last Fall 2021 but I started recording a log of occurrences in February which I will provide to you. I also attached below a screenshot with the area in the neighborhood that the smell pervades when it occurs. Sometimes the smell is so strong, it prevents me from being able to enjoy being outside and breathing the air. I am concerned for my and my family's health. On bad days, It's almost as if the chemical released right next to me, the smell is so strong! Every occurrence lasts from a few hours to 2 days at most. I noticed there seemed to be a somewhat consistent bi-weekly schedule but the last two occurrences have happened only three days apart. My hope is that you would be able to compare my log of occurrences to Gibson's release schedule or any other business that has emissions in our area. I'm sure I did not record all instances, only the ones when I or my wife was home but hopefully it's of some use.
Complaint was referred to Metro Stormwater who notified the Metro Department of Health. Metro Department of Health is investigating and notified the complainant.
