Description and Writeup
Bonnie DePew (Domtar) left voicemail for BBC on 5/6/2019 to report a release of an estimated 600-700 gallons of raw mill water to the South Fork Holston River via stormwater outfall 018. BBC spoke with Ms. DePew and received additional information. A sump pump at the Domtar raw water treatment plant was overwhelmed during WTP sand filter draining. Excess water overflowed from the containment sump overland to stormwater outfall 018. The discharge was mill water that had undergone the majority of treatment before usage as mill water. Turbidity of the water was <1 NTU. Water pH was 7.7, and total residual chlorine ranged from 0-0.3 ppm. Domtar personnel took steps to stop the release as soon as possible upon discovery. The cause of sand filter problems at the WTP is under investigation. A written report will be submitted.
