Complaint Description and Writeup
Complaint Description and Writeup
Complainant stated that there is green algae growing in Swafford Branch, the stream that borders his property. He stated that he has never observed this in the creek before. Complainant stated that biosolids were land applied on a neighboring property and that they (land applicators) did not adhere to buffers, so when it rains, biosolids run-off into the stream. He is concerned that the algae could be harmful and his livestock use the stream to get water.
I responded to the complaint on 7.16.2024. I met with the property owner and examined the algal growth. The algae was growing in a shallow eddy next to the stream (Swafford Branch). I examined it under the microscope and it is non-toxic filamentous green algae, Spirogyra sp. I notified the complainant by e-mail about my findings. The complainant also requested contact information for a possible ARAP permit (bridge crossing) and bank restoration/stabilization. I provided contact information for our ARAP staff as well as the 319 Grant program contact for Dept. of Ag.
