Complaint Description and Writeup
Complaint Description and Writeup
Mike Galbraith called to reported that, while mowing the grass, he observed about 30 dead fish in Old Hickory Lake.
I visited the site on 8-8-08 and found the fish as reported by Mr. Galbraith. The fish were of various species and large including largemouth bass, carp and drum. The fish were in an advanced state of decompostion. Vultures had fed on some fish, and large skeletal remains had been dragged onto the bank.
The area of the kill was actually in an isolated embayment on the unnamed tributary separated from the Drakes Creek embayment by a spillway at Sanders Ferry Road. This isolated embayment was extremely green with algae. There were living fish in the embayment. There were no signs of fish in distress or any other indication that there was an ongoing problem in the embayment.
I speculate that the fish had died as a result of low dissolved oxygen caused by the excessive algae. Because this incident apparently occurred several days ago, I see no way to further investigate. - Joey
