Complaint Description and Writeup
Jacob Hite (BAE Systems/HSAAP) left voicemail for BBC during evening of 03-AUG-20 to report discovery of an acidic discharge into Madd Branch at HSAAP Area A. BBC spoke with Mr. Hite shortly after initial report. Mr. Hite stated that an estimated 60 gallons of acetic acid was lost to cooling water outfall 012 from a column sludge heater in building 2A. A dye trace of a suspect manhole serving this area had been performed within the past week, but no leaks were found at that time. At the time of report, the release had been stopped and the process shut down. Outfall 012 pH reached approximately 4 S.U., and an instream monitor downstream in Madd Branch registered a pH drop to approximately 6 S.U. Mr. Hite later confirmed that he notified the downstream First U.D. of Hawkins County WTP personnel of the release. Further investigation of the release was scheduled for the morning of 04-AUG-20. A written report on the release cause and corrective actions will be submitted.
