Complaint Description and Writeup
Complaint Description and Writeup
Received voicemail on 09/05/17 from complainant reporting overflow from collection system in her neighborhood. I returned her call the next morning on 9/6/17. She informed me that a collection system line break had occurred in the Farmington neighborhood in Franklin between Hartland and Braintree Roads and that raw sewage had entered a nearby stream. She was concerned because neighborhood children frequently play in the stream and she wanted to know how long they should stay out of it. She also wanted to know if Berry's Chapel UD had reported the incident. LKS 9/11/17***
Contacted Bruce Meyer of Berry's Chapel UD on 09/06/17. He was aware of the incident and had provided initial notification within a day of occurrence. The break occurred as a result of the contractor installing line to serve a new development. The boring and associated pit for the new line was very close to an existing line. This activity caused the existing line to separate and fill the pit with raw sewage. The sewage flowed into adjacent ditch and may have reached stream. Line has been temporarily fixed and no further issues have been noted. Permanent replacement will occur once the installation work is complete. LKS 9/11/17 ****
Mr. Meyer contacted me on 9/08/17 to relay sampling results. Two sampling points in UT to Lynnwood Branch came back with E.coli results of 341 CFU/100 mL and 285 CFU/100 mL. Reviewing results from DWR's stream monitoring in this area indicate that E.coli levels are commonly in this range for this stream segment. Informed Mr. Meyer of this information and suggested he provide these results to the local residents, as well as provide them with information about DWR's Water Quality Assessment Data Viewer. LKS 9/11/17***
Followed up with complainant to let her know that Berry's Chapel UD had kept DWR apprised of the situation. Informed that E.coli levels are commonly high in this area, stream is considered not supporting for many of its designated uses and told her of the water quality data viewer. LKS 9/11/17
