Complaint Description and Writeup
Complaint Description and Writeup
Complainant stated, "We had a water test done that resulted in being contaminated with high levels of chlorine and sulfur. The chlorine level tested at 1 and the hardest tested at 8. My wife is dealing with some medical issues that occurred from contaminated water."
On 9/5/24, TDEC field office staff received complaint. 9/9/24 the complainant was contacted by phone. Complainant discussed concerns about high chlorine levels, gritty water, and high hardness levels. The complainant contacted a third-party water softening system for a free water testing. This testing led to increased concerns from the complainant (Free Cl2 of 1, Hardness of 8). During call complainant mentioned that his wife was having health problems and specifically mentioned acid reflux. After call with complainant, La Vergne Water System was contacted to schedule a sample date.
On 9/16/24 State staff TNH and TAK met with La Vergne staff prior to meeting complainant at his home address. Free cl2 analysis was completed by both state and LWS staff. Samples for this analysis were taken at a fire hydrant adjacent to the property (1.2/1.5) and at a neighbor’s outdoor spigot (1.3/1.8). In addition, LWS took a water sample to analyze at LWS lab (hardness: 136). While onsite, the complainant further specified that his wife has contracted the bacteria Helicobacter pylori. Upon learning this information, Division staff requested LWS to complete a cross-connection inspection of the surrounding area.
On 9/20/24 LWS handed out a x-connection survey and collected the completed surveys on 9/22/24. LWS mentioned that only 3 residents had completed the cross- connection survey.
on 9/30/24, LWS was requested to submit the past 5 months of bacteriological monitoring results from the proximal area of the complainant's address. All results were negative for total coliform.
On 10/1/2024, after email correspondence, complainant stated that their survey had not been picked up. LWS was contacted and asked to go attempt to collect additional completed surveys. Additionally, the TN Health Department was contacted for information regarding H. Pylori. Requested information includes, how resistant is the bacteria to chlorination, how to test for the bacteria in water (total coliform can be negative while this bacterium is present), and if there had been additional reports of this strain of bacteria.
10/3/2024, LWS responded with results from cross-connection survey. One possible location in need of device. No activity recorded that would result in a cross-connection affecting LWS provided water. In addition, TN Department of Health responded saying that the bacterium of interest would likely not be present at Cl2 levels recorded at location
10/7/2024, Division sent response and closed out complaint on WL.
