Description and Writeup
TDEC DWR has received numerous complaints concerning issues on the South Fork of the Holston River. These issues include observing a white slime on the surface of the water and white balls floating on the river. Some complaints have reported seeing dead fish along the banks of the river. The appearance of the white material has been observed in the section of the river near the Domtar facility.
(Continued from "Investigation" section) 04/21/2023- Site visit to Domtar outfall on left descending bank of the South Fork of the Holston River (SFHR). TDEC personnel included, Beverly Brown, Corey Click, and Franklin Colyer. Bonnie Depew with Domtar was present. TDEC personnel got in SFHR. The white substance was observed covering the substrate in the river downstream of Domtar's outfall. It did not seem to look as bad as it did last week.
TDEC personnel observed SFHR from Ridgefield's Bridge the white slimy substance was observed on substrate in SFHR and white flocculant was also floating in water column of SFHR. The sluice looked fine. Fish were observed from the bridge and seemed to be fine.
TDEC personnel also observed the SFHR at the conflux of the North Fork Holston River (NFHR). There was some evidence of white flocculant material in SFHR. None observed in NFHR. Fisherman in boat stated the white flocculant material is clearly visible in SFHR.
