2-11-14: EKB received NRC report regarding the release of 150,000 pounds of cream yeast onto the ground and into storm drain at Fleischmann's Yeast facility at 2743 Riverport Road, in Memphis.
2-11-14: EKB contacted Stacy Ellis, Fleischmann's Yeast Environmental Manager, to get a status update on the release. According to Ms. Ellis, equipment failure caused the content of three tanker cars (cream yeast) to spill onto the ground at the facility. The spill was contained and the storm drains which lead to McKellar Lake were blocked. According to Ms. Ellis, the amount of yeast that entered the drain was unknown at that time, but the majority of the released material was contained on the ground. The cold weather and the application of kitty litter has hardened up the spilled material which made it easier for the facility's contractor, Excel, to excavate it via a backhoe. The material is non-hazardous and would be transported to a local landfill.
2-12-14: City of Memphis MS4 personnel inspected the storm drains at the facility and determined that the facility did a good job with the clean up and noted very little evidence of the product being release into the storm drain system.
