Complaint Description and Writeup
My daughter and I were kayaking on OHL in Gallatin. We went up into the inlet that approaches Lock 4 Road, and since the water was higher than normal we were able to kayak into Town Creek for a bit. The toxic substance was there where Town Creek empties into the lake. The first thing we noticed was the smell. It struck us as a chemical smell, but I cannot think of anything to compare it to. Then we saw the substance. It was white, turning the water near it milky. But as we paddled closer toward the creek, it became very thick and was like a white solid, coating the surface of the water. In places it was also breaking into something stringy, like spider webs.
The surface that this substance was affecting was probably about 1,000 square feet. We have no idea what it was.
This happened on Tuesday evening 5/9/23.
Gallatin MS4 investigated on 5/12/23, and reported "Please note that the some odor coming from Rich’s was present at Lakeshore Dr., however, no matting or white solid material was observed. "
MPM- Gallatin provided photos showing the creek and embayment clear. However, Gallatin reported a large sewer overflow which occurred on 5/8/2023, into Town Creek.
