Pre-Mine Inspection
Pre-mine inspection of a previously mined site. An HD has already been accepted for this site. It determined that two of the previously used treatment ponds have become confluent with the stream. It appears that some activity has occurred at the site recently, but there was no evidence of an unpermitted discharge of mine wastewater. Before mining activities at this facility commence, the stream reaches that go through the site will need to be better isolated from mine wastewater and activities. On the uphill portion of the haul road, at least one gap in the berm was noted, allowing runoff to enter the stream. Also, as water leaves the in-stream Pond 6, it appears that it primarily crosses the haul road overland, but a portion makes its way through an abandoned(?) culvert. The ditch at the terminus of the culvert flows downhill and gradually disappears. It's recommended to consolidate the flow paths so that mine wastewater and storm water can be kept isolated from the stream flow. In addition, the stream should not be allowed to flow over the haul road without a proper crossing. These issues do not represent violations as no permit has been issued here but will need to be addressed in the permitting process, potentially requiring an ARAP. No other issues were noted.
