Notes
A total of 3" of rain had been received in the area over the past 7 days, 2" within the past 24 hours. Gray water was observed entering the stream channel in the vicinity of the Loyston Quarry. The quarry was not discharging at the time and all quarry areas are sloped to the pit, away from the stream. Staff on site stated that the Highway Department had placed French drains under Loyston road in the vicinity of the seep to address springs under the road. Stress cracks have developed along the shoulder of the road in this area, and were also noticed in 2013 imagery. It is suspected that the springs under the road are carrying fines from the road base into the stream during heavy rains and causing subsidence of the road. DWR KEFO to be consulted on this issue.
After consulting with other DWR staff, the issue is thought to likely be related to the road structure/seeps. Mining Section to attempt a follow-up inspection during a heavy rain event to check for potential drainage issues within the processing area and quarry pit.
