Notes
Inspection conducted with staff from the KFO, Mining Section including: Rebecca Lenz, Bonnie Craighead, and Chris Pracheil. The primary purpose of the visit was to allow KFO, Mining Section staff to look at impacts to the UNT to Bear Creek.
The facility is still keeping Pond 2 pumped down as needed to keep it from seeping into the UNT to Bear Creek. Beaver activity has compromised Pond 2 resulting in a seep occurring to the UNT to Bear Creek. The pond level at the time of our visit was low enough that the seep was not occurring to the UNT to Bear Creek. The facility plans to submit a proposal for the permanent fix for Pond 2 which will likely result in a permit modification.
It appears, the UNT to Bear Creek may need to be re-evaluated due to the time that has passed since the impacts were first noted in February 2021. In addition, Mining Section staff looked where the UNT to Bear Creek enters Bear Creek and further evaluation of the UNT to Bear Creek and Bear Creek are needed to assess potential impacts from the operation.
