| A full site inspection was conducted in response to a complaint of sediment entering a spring and pond below the mine site.
The facility is a new mine site which is not fully open. During the inspection the following was observed: The facility entrance has a rock tracking pad and sediment and erosion control best management practices (BMPs) are installed along the facility's driveway and haul road. The disturbed areas are enclosed by vegetated berms & BMPs or the drainage is directed towards the pit. The mine pit was open and rock was being extracted but the facility did not have a rock crusher or screen on site. A scale pad and a scale house have been constructed. The facility was not discharging at the time of the inspection and no water or sediment was observed leaving the site. The spring discharging into the pond below the quarry was discharging clear water but the pond was quite turbid with what appeared to be clay particles in suspension.
The facility needs to improve the BMPs along the driveway to prevent a loss of sediment to Yellow Creek. Sumps and rock check dams would be helpful along the steepest part of the driveway ditch. The large areas of unvegetated soil on west side and upper portions of the driveway should be seeded and stabilize. Stabilize the large areas of unvegetated soil near the scale house or direct the drainage of this are to the mine pit or treatment basin.
